Annual Plywood Regatta Highlights Recreational Boating Careers

On April 14 and 15, Dania Beach Marina hosted the 22nd Annual Plywood Regatta organized by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF). Using only hand-tools, three sheets of plywood, 3M 5200 fast-cure caulk and zip ties, 36 teams of south Florida middle and high school, and college students, built, painted and decorated boats. Once complete, the teams compete in a series of heats to determine overall winners.

While the competition is fun and prizes bring bragging rights, the event also works to introduce students to career opportunities associated with recreational boating. Proceeds from the All Plywood Regatta go toward South Florida’s marine industry education programs and the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund. This year MIASF awarded $6,000 in scholarships to six students bound for careers in the marine industry. Maritime Professional Training, a sponsor of one of the teams, matched the $1,000 scholarship for two of the recipients.

Support for the event comes from, the city of Dania Beach, Westport Yachts, Lauderdale Marine Center, Fort Lauderdale Mariners Club, Teak Decking Systems, Seafarer Marine, Interlux, 3M, Boat Owner’s Warehouse, and High Seas Yacht Service.
