Broward County Waterway Cleanup Collects 32 Tons of Trash

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) and the Marine Industry Cares Foundation, organized the 41st Annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup on March 3. The group of more than 1,250 volunteers on land and on the water, collected 32 tons of trash from 31 sites around the county, including typical items like tires, shopping carts and lawn furniture, as well as oddities, such as an air hockey table, a commode, and a sonar sounder.

According to the organizers, the clean up is the largest and longest running environment event in the county. The Lauderdale Small Boat Club hosted the volunteer thank you party, the “Trash Bash.” The clean-up was preceded by a middle and high school art and essay scholarship contest. MIASF awarded $1,000 to the top two winners and awarded hundreds more to the runners up. The scholarships and the event are sponsored by Florida Inland Navigation District (F.I.N.D.), Broward County, North Springs Improvement District, National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation, Project Anodyne, JM Family Enterprises, and many more organizations.
