California Anglers Stop Lead Weight Ban—For Now

The California Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Substances passed Assembly Bill 2787 with an amendment that calls for further study on the potential environmental impacts from lead fishing weights, in lieu of a complete ban for weights/sinkers 50grams or less.

While this is a victory, the California Sportfishing League, a non-profit that has taken the lead on opposing a lead ban, noted the study is too broad and could be contracted to an anti-fishing organization instead of an objective government agency.

More than 5,500 California anglers signed the “Stop the Fishing Tackle Ban” petition, urging legislators to oppose the bill as originally drafted. A large contingent of business and recreational fishing and boating groups have worked in opposition to the ban for years, asking for greater analysis before passing legislation that could have lasting impacts on fishing participation rates and the jobs that depend on outdoor tourism. The group includes:  California Association of Harbor Masters and Port Captains, California Parks Company, California Parks Hospitality Association, California Yacht Brokers Association, California Yacht Marinas, Marina Recreation Association, Safe Harbor Marinas, and Western Boaters Safety Group.
