California Marina Renovated for Larger Slips, More Amenities

Legacy Partners has launched a $13 million phased renovation of Wayfarer Marina (formerly Mariners Bay Marina) in Marina del Rey, California.  The project is part of a $65 million redevelopment project that also includes renovation of 379 apartments.

The existing marina has 409 slips (counting end-ties), but by the time the project is complete, that number will be reduced to 315 slips/side-ties to accommodate larger boats. The marina’s slips will be able to accommodate boats from 25 to 60 feet with additional slips added for boats in the 40- to 45-foot range. The end-ties will be able to handle boats a little more than 100 feet.

“The new docks will have cable and high-speed internet hookups, water and updated electrical service. “We found that for a lot of the bigger boats and the houseboats, the electrical capacity wasn’t sufficient; we had boats plugging in to multiple dock boxes,” said Ben Mount, development manager, Legacy Partners. “We are adding a sewer pumpout station, which the original docks did not have. That’s a nice amenity for our boaters because they won’t have to go to another marina to pumpout.”

Bellingham Marine is building the new concrete floating docks, which will replace the 50-year-old wooden docks. The company started work in September 2017, driving new piles for the south side of the marina, which is being replaced in phase one of the project. All the new docks and services in phase one of the project should be complete by April 2018.

Mount said that they were able to move all of the boats from the marina’s south side to other locations within the marina during the renovation project. “There’s not a whole lot of slip availability right now in Marina del Rey, since three other marinas are now under renovation as well,” he said. “There are more boats on the north side because they are smaller slips, so we will probably have to move some boaters to other marinas during the second phase.” That will begin in September 2018, and by that time the other marinas in the area should be able to temporarily accommodate some of Wayfarer Marina’s customers.

The marina offers a boaters’ lounge, multiple bathrooms with showers and will be installing laundry facilities. The retail spaces of the apartments that are being renovated by Legacy Partners include the office of a yacht broker.
