Nantucket Boat Basin, Nantucket, Massachusetts

2013 - Small Category Winner

This 240 slips destination marina in Nantucket, Massachusetts, had its best year in 44 years. Nantucket Boat Basin caters to the transient market and generally, boat up to 220 feet, though it can accommodate megayachts up to 320 feet in certain configurations. Seventy-five percent of its business is transient boaters, and though the marina is open year-round, the majority of its business occurs June through September. Between Memorial Day and Columbus Day approximately 2,500 boats travel to Nantucket Boat Basin and a 50 to 60 boat turnaround is not uncommon for busy days. Occupancy during its peak times is 90 to 95 percent.

Director of Marina Operations, George H. Bassett, Jr., CMM; Assistant Director of Marina Operations, Christina Martin, CMM; Communications Manager, Christy Bassett Baker; and Dock Maintenance Supervisor, David Nathan Palmer, manage the marina. The management staff operates a seasonal staff of 32 to 36 employees.

The marina’s amenities include 18 bath/shower facilities, coin-operated laundry, fuel dock, complimentary Wi-Fi and cable TV access and in-slip pumpout, animal park, business center, and full concierge services.

Southport Marina, Southport, North Carolina

2013 - Large Category Winner

Southport Marina in Southport, North Carolina, has been growing since new ownership took over in 2006. It started with a complete rebuild, and since have added more services like boatyard, marine retail. Southport Marina, like its small winner counterparts, caters to transient boaters. The 468-slip marina also caters to long-term wet slips customers and dry storage customers, with 102 indoor dry storage spaces and 141 outdoor.

After the long road through the economic downturn, the marina adopted a new concept for 2013 – Back to Business, which focused on the marina performing at peak performance, as the boating market

Marina Manager Hank Whitley, CMM and Thad Moor, who oversees the marina business at parent real estate firm Preston Development Company, in Cary, North Carolina, manage the marina. They manage 3 full-time and 2 part-time employees for the wet storage and dry storage/boatyard operations, in addition to a part-time bookkeeper and two part-time seasonal employees. It’s the main profit centers are fuel sales, wet storage and dry storage, and in 2013, Southport Marina added a new service profit center. Previously, the on-site boatyard was 100 percent subleased, but the marina formed a new partnership with Zimmerman Marine. Now, Southport will perform all haul-outs and launches, as well as pressure-washing, capturing new revenue for the facility.
