Upgrades to Alum Creek Marina

After years of struggling to maintain a marina that dated back to the 1970s, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources renovated Alum Creek Marina last year. “We had replaced deck boards and a lot of different pieces and parts, and the utilities were aged,” said Phillip Miller, deputy chief capital improvements administrator, Ohio DNR, Division of Parks and Recreation. “When we had storms, the docks would be breaking apart. Because of the popularity of the marina, the decision was made to replace the entire dock system.”

The old floating docks at the marina, which is located on Alum Creek Lake near Columbus, were held in place by chain and cable. The new floating docks, which feature a steel structure with ipe wood decking, are anchored to piling. That should help extend the life of the facility, Miller said.

The number of slips is slightly reduced from the previous 220, but DNR did increase some slip sizes. Some of the slips have water and electric service. The department also relocated the fuel and pumpout station to improve the flow of boat traffic in and out of the marina.
