Improvements Continue at Port of Astoria
Published on October 24, 2025Renovations continue on the commercial fishing infrastructure at the Port of Astoria in Oregon. The port is updating its 80-year-old Pier 2 West after securing a $1.2 million pre-construction grant from Business Oregon and $25.3 million in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) in 2023. The project was paused recently to satisfy NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) approval in accordance with federal funding criteria.
PND Engineers came onboard to design the improvements. The port also hired Pacific Habitat Services (PHS) to coordinate mitigation opportunities which are currently focused on utilizing the existing old port site and an additional state-owned property to the north.
As of September, the port reports that PND performed an updated site inspection resulting in a list of emergency repairs for an estimated fee of $1 million. The emergency repairs are meant to address deterioration at pile-to-superstructure bearing points along critical access corridors. The port allocated $500,000 to initiate the repairs in mid-July. At an August commission meeting, port staff requested another $300,000 to allow Bergerson to complete 85–90% of the repairs, while the port will complete the rest. The project is planned to take place in three phases over the next three years.
