ABYC Names Educators of the Year

The ABYC Foundation has named Magnus Gedda from Volvo Penta and Anthony Margiotta from the College of the Florida Keys as 2021 Educators of the Year. The annual award honors extraordinary marine service technology instructors teaching in a high school, post-secondary school, or within the industry.

Gedda has worked with Volvo Penta since 2004, including two rounds of the Volvo Ocean Race traveling the world as a service manager for the competing sailboats.

As product training manager, Gedda develops and oversees the marine and industrial product training programs for Volvo Penta dealer technicians, OEM partners and customers located in North, Central, and South America. To date he has supervised the training of over 9,000 students—more than doubling student participation over the past five years.

Additionally, he has ramped up the company’s eLearning offerings by delivering a more robust experience for students. He and his team instructed 2,100 technicians by the close of 2020, of which 1,500 were trained online.

Margiotta has been teaching marine engineering, seamanship, and welding since 2013 at the College of the Florida Keys (CFK) and instructs a range of 17 courses.

Margiotta draws from real-life experiences based on his nine years with the U.S. Coast Guard. He maintains currency in his subject matter as an ABYC Master Technician, completing the Yamaha Certification Program train-the-trainer course, and through his work with industry organizations including the American Welding Society.

When the college went to fully online instruction, Margiotta developed a directed study course. Since fall 2020, his courses have been a hybrid model of online and in-person lessons as well as modified lab activities to conform to COVID protocols at the school.

As co-winners of the 2021 ABYC Foundation Educator of the Year, Gedda and Margiotta will each receive an award, a free ABYC professional-level certification class, and free registration for the ABYC Foundation’s next Educator Training Conference.
