ABYC Textbook Now Available At No Charge For Educators

The American Boat & Yacht Council Foundation (ABYC Foundation) and Active Interest Media (AIM) announced a new partnership to help school educators and their students navigate the new online-intensive teaching and learning world. The ABYC textbook, Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology, is now available as a free web accessible book, for marine service educators and their current students to use. Since the announcement was made earlier this month, 25 schools from around the country have requested access to support their online teaching efforts.

“This is donation by AIM is a wonderful statement about their solidarity with the marine industry,” said Margaret Podlich, executive director of the nonprofit ABYC Foundation. “Instructors are faced with finishing the semester in a totally new context, so for them to be able to provide well-vetted content, free of charge to their students, is a great way to provide continuity to our country’s future marine service techs.”

Chapters in the textbook range from general shop safety and practices, to marine electrical system theory, servicing boat trailers, and maintenance and troubleshooting for outboards, gas, and diesel inboards. The textbook also features QR codes with access to online teaching videos. The hardback book is regularly priced at $149 and is affiliated with a larger curriculum and instructor materials available for purchase through ABYC. Teachers are encouraged to contact Margaret Podlich at mpodlich@abycfoundation.org for more information or to request access to the Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology available through August 2020.
