Boating United Issues Action Alert to Stop Aluminum Tariffs

A Boating United alert has been issued for the marine industry to contact its legislators to tell them the proposed aluminum tariffs are unacceptable. There are now two different tariffs on aluminum. The first is a worldwide 10 percent tariff, and the second, more damaging, is the Department of Commerce’s proposal for an additional 60 percent tariff on aluminum sheet. This material is used in 43 percent of the boats produced by U.S. manufacturers and in a majority of trailers. The tariffs are also increasing the likelihood of a trade war starting with the European Union that could adversely impact $1.7 billion in marine exports. All of these combined could have devastating results for the marine industry, damaging its global competitiveness, and forcing the price of new boats to rise substantially.
