Marina Upgrade Complete on Lake Ontario

Lakefront Promenade Marina in the city of Mississauga underwent a complete upgrade over the past three years after local water temperatures decreased following the closure of the neighboring coal-burning power plant. For years, the marina was something of an anomaly for Lake Ontario as the power plant discharged warm water that prevented ice formation in the winter months.

The redesigned floating fuel dock includes a flexible double-walled fuel line system.

Following the closure of the coal-burning plant, the 25-year-old aluminum-frame docks endured ice forces for the first time and replacement became necessary.

The design of the new marina began in 2019 and construction took place over three years during the off seasons, allowing the marina to remain open. The marina replaced its three main docks (A, B, C) with phase one focused on A-Dock and the fuel dock, phase two replacing the B-Dock, and phase three replacing C-Dock. Kropf Industrial Inc. performed the dock work, which incorporated a welded steel frame with epoxy coated steel pipes for floats and composite decking. Sacrificial anodes will provide the docks with additional corrosion protection.

The fuel dock was redesigned to meet modern standards for liquid fuel line over water. Design challenges arose from an adjacent regional water lot containing extensive underwater pipework which limited the breadth of the construction zone. A flexible double-walled fuel line system was chosen to circumvent the design issues. Permitted by variance, the flexible fuel line allowed usage of a floating dock like the legacy design, as opposed to a fixed dock.

The marina installed new power pedestals at the docks with plug-ins and water connection

Other improvements include a new power system with new pedestals at the docks with plug-ins and water connections, new electrical panel at the marina building, and new boost transformers at the shore wall for each dock to compensate for the voltage drop. The project also included a prefabricated kiosk on the fuel dock for point of sale, and new security gates and access ramps for each of the three docks. Solar lights and corner fenders on all of the dock fingers provide additional safety.
