Modern Marinas Making Waves with Innovation

With more than 8,000 marinas across the United States, standing out is no small feat. Yet, these three marinas have managed to do just that—rising above the rest through a blend of Southern hospitality, environmental responsibility, strong community ties and a commitment to continuous improvement. By listening to their members and prioritizing transparency, they’ve created thriving waterfront destinations that truly serve their boating communities.

Library and Libations
Located along the scenic Sapelo Sound in Townsend, Georgia, Barbour River Yacht Club is one of three marinas in the state to earn the Certified Clean Marina designation. This status reflects the marina’s proactive commitment to surpassing Georgia’s environmental best practices. Family-owned and operated, the club’s mission is clear: a “relentless pursuit of friendly and excellent service.”

The libations deck and clubhouse deck are popular locations where members gather to enjoy the waterfront views.

The journey from vision to reality wasn’t without challenges. In the early 1990s, initial plans sparked environmental concerns, particularly regarding the neighboring Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service worried that marina operations might disrupt the flight path of the once-endangered wood stork. In response, Barbour River Yacht Club partnered with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and congressional representatives to develop a plan rooted in environmental responsibility. Their efforts paid off; the wood stork population rebounded, and a lasting partnership formed with the refuge. “We’ve given them free use of our hoist in emergencies, and they’ve been very appreciative,” said John Underwood, owner of Barbour River Yacht Club. Today, the marina stands as a model for balancing development with conservation.

Bordering a national wildlife refuge, the marina offers members front-row access to one of Georgia’s most biodiverse regions, home to more than 350 bird species. The clubhouse porch, outfitted with comfortable seating, offers a peaceful space to take in the sights and sounds of nature.

The yacht club’s library has 2,000 rotating titles, with a take-a-book, leave-a-book approach.

A standout social spot is the libations deck, beloved by members for hosting everything from weddings to weekend gatherings. A vintage Coca-Cola machine delivers refreshment at below-market prices—a small but thoughtful detail that adds to the club’s charm. Guests are invited to bring a beverage and enjoy panoramic views in a relaxed setting. This spot is especially popular on weekends, drawing members to relax, socialize and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Barbour River Yacht Club, located along the Sapelo Sound in Townsend, Georgia, recently added 13 new covered boat storage stalls with plans to build deeper stalls in the future to meet boater demand.

When it comes to boating, books might not be the first thing to come to mind, but books are front and center in the clubhouse. Underwood is an avid reader, and this shows with the impressive honor system library exceeding 2,000 rotating titles. The library has a take-a-book, leave-a-book approach, which means that its shelves are in constant rotation and packed with some of the latest and greatest books, including brand-new New York Times best sellers.

The marina has continuously expanded and improved its amenities since its inception. Most recently, 13 new covered boat storage stalls were added, bringing the total to 31. “All 31 are full, and we have a waiting list,” Underwood shared, noting that deeper stalls are in development to meet demand. Other recent upgrades include adding ethanol-free fuel, bagged ice and an upgraded fish-cleaning station. A permit is pending for on-site bait sales, with infrastructure already in place near the clubhouse.

Fitness and Massages
Nestled along the Intracoastal Waterway in Stuart, Florida, Safe Harbor Harborage Yacht Club offers more than just a marina. It’s a lifestyle destination. With a world-class marina that is part of the Safe Harbor network, members enjoy access to a wealth of upscale amenities, including a resort-style pool and hot tub, waterfront pool bar, and rejuvenating saunas in the fitness center.

The marina hosts several events, including comedy nights, Mother’s Day breakfasts and Mardi Gras parties

General Manager Lauren DeLuca emphasizes the club’s mission: “Safe Harbor Marinas is committed to providing exceptional service and memorable experiences for the global boating community.” That commitment has not gone unnoticed. Safe Harbor Harborage Yacht Club has been honored with the prestigious Elite Fleet Boaters’ Choice Award for three consecutive years (2022, 2023 and 2024), in addition to receiving the Boaters’ Choice Award in 2020.

At Safe Harbor Harborage Yacht Club, wellness takes center stage. Members can prioritize their health while enjoying waterfront views. The newly renovated clubhouse gym is outfitted with top-tier equipment, including a Peloton bike, a stair climber, a rowing machine, treadmills, free weights and a versatile multi-functional trainer. For those focused on holistic wellness, the facility also features yoga mats and accessories for mindful movement. After a rigorous workout or a peaceful day on the water, members can unwind in the saunas or schedule a personalized session with the on-site massage therapist.

The clubhouse is a vibrant hub of activity, offering a lineup of creative and social events year-round. From hands-on classes like paint and sip, flower arranging and themed crafting parties to Friday buffet dinners and poolside movie nights, there is something for every interest. “We also hosted a Comedy Night and Magic Show (both dinner buffet events) this season, and we’ve started doing recurring game luncheons,” DeLuca said. Themed dances, particularly those celebrating the ‘70s and ‘80s, have quickly become member favorites, adding a retro flair to the club’s already dynamic atmosphere.

Safe Harbor Harborage Yacht Club in Stuart, Florida, recently renovated the clubhouse gym to include a variety of exercise equipment along with a view of the Intracoastal Waterway.

At Safe Harbor Harborage, every occasion is worth celebrating. From Mardi Gras parties and Mother’s Day breakfasts to surprise visits from the Grinch, the spirit of celebration is always in the air. “We really try to promote and celebrate the holidays, especially during the season,” DeLuca said.

A standout highlight is the club’s Fourth of July Extravaganza, featuring live music, all-day food and drink specials and the ever-popular poolside boat races. This lighthearted competition invites members to create 12×12-inch non-motorized boats to race in the pool, with trophies and bragging rights awarded to the winner.
