MTA/NJ Donates Tools & Equipment for Marine Technician Students

The Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ) has donated tools and equipment to support the Marine Maintenance program at Cape May County Technical Schools (Cape Tech), helping provide students with hands-on learning opportunities and preparing them for careers in the marine industry.

The donation included approximately $3,000 worth of tools and products presented by Brian Houf of Marine Equipment and Supply Co., current president of MTA/NJ, along with $2,000 in additional equipment donated by the Derema Group, outdoor recreation marketing specialists representing marine-related manufacturers including Dometic, Tie Down and Star brite.

The equipment package included a hydraulic press machine, toolbox, brake line kits, compression testers, and numerous other professional-grade tools that will be incorporated into Cape Tech’s Marine Maintenance curriculum. The additional resources will allow students to gain practical experience working with modern equipment and better prepare them for internships and careers in the marine trades.

The Marine Maintenance program at Cape Tech launched in September 2025 and provides students with training in the theory, maintenance and troubleshooting of outboard and inboard marine engines, as well as marine systems and trailer maintenance. Students also can earn Yamaha Service Skills Training credentials and participate in internships with marine businesses throughout Cape May County.

The donation is part of the workforce development efforts supported by the MTA/NJ Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to strengthening New Jersey’s recreational marine industry through education and training initiatives.

Funded through MTA/NJ member-supported fundraising events and raffles, the foundation has awarded more than $35,000 in scholarships and student awards since 2006 and supports marine education through training reimbursements, certification programs, and other professional development opportunities for industry employees.
