Three Facilities Named Michigan Clean Marinas

The Michigan Clean Marina Program announced that three Michigan marinas have been named as Certified Clean Marinas. They are Klave’s Marina, Ryde Marine Inc., and South Shore Marine, LLC. Each has been certified for three-year terms through 2023. Additionally, four marinas have been recertified as Michigan Clean Marinas. They are G. Marsten Dame Marina, City of Harbor Springs Municipal Marina, Mackinaw City Municipal Marina, and Yacht Basin Marina. They have been recertified for another five-year term through 2025. Eighty-five Michigan marinas have obtained Certified Clean Marina status and are maintaining this prestigious certification.

“We welcome the three newly certified marinas to the Clean Marina Program, and we commend those who are recertifying for their continuation of following best practices,” said Nicki Polan, executive director of the Michigan Boating Industries Association. “MBIA encourages all marinas to pursue this voluntary certification. It is not difficult, and there are both financial and environmental gains that come with this effort.”

The Clean Marina Program (CMP) was initiated to preserve and protect, through voluntary efforts, Michigan’s greatest resource, the Great Lakes and its connecting waterways. The certification process begins with a pledge to participate in the program, followed by either attending a workshop or referencing the online classroom to review the best management practices, during this time you will fill out a self-evaluation checklist. After implementing improvements and reaching a level of competencies, a CMP Certification Specialist visits and evaluates the facility’s environmental stewardship. When the facility reaches established goals, they receive their designation.

More boaters are becoming aware of the program and are searching out these facilities as places they want to patronize. Nearly 60 percent of boaters surveyed by the Department of Natural Resources in their recent boater survey would prefer to go to a Certified Clean Marina over a non-certified marina. The average survey respondent were males in the age range of 55-64 years old with household incomes of $100,000 plus. The most popular boats among respondents were fishing boats, cruisers, and kayak/canoes/stand-ups. Read the rest of the results here:
