Zero Plastics Marina Initiative Begins in RI

The Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA) and marina operators have partnered with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) to launch the Zero Plastics Marina initiative. The goal is for marinas and their guests to help clean up the bay now and into the future.

The partners developed ten pollution prevention action items to help marina owners commit to and implement the program; participating marinas and boatyards can customize the program according to their own business practices. The activities include:

  • Designate a “Zero Plastics” Steward
  • Develop and Implement a Plan to Reduce Single-use Plastic Water Bottles
  • Provide Water Refilling Stations in Public Areas
  • Eliminate Single-use Plastic Bags
  • Provide Ample Opportunity for Recycling
  • Post Responsible Signage
  • Provide Responsible Dinnerware
  • Participate in a Shrink Wrap Recycling Program
  • Organize or Sponsor a Shoreline Clean-up Event
  • Install a Trash Skimmer
